Can You Get Invisalign Even If You Grind Your Teeth?

Are you interested in Invisalign? You might like the idea of this treatment as it’s often more comfortable than traditional braces while also being removable. You’ll have to wear thin plastic trays on your teeth to move them. But if you tend to grind them, you might wonder whether this type of orthodontics will be affected. Here’s what you should know about this habit and clear aligners.

Will Teeth Grinding Stop Me from Getting Invisalign?

As you may already know, you’ll have to wear Invisalign for 20 to 22 hours every day. The only time you’ll have to take them out is to brush and eat. That means you keep them in while you’re asleep, but this is often when people grind their teeth. It’s a subconscious habit, so stopping it may be easier said than done while you’re counting sheep. The good news is that this doesn’t generally cause many issues for clear aligners.

You’ll have to swap to a different set every week or two to keep your grin shifting as expected. With this routine change, you may not have enough time to damage the trays, as you’ll get a new pair fairly consistently. That said, it’s important to know that they might get worn out faster. This shouldn’t stop them from being effective, but you may need replacements depending on how severe this habit is.

There is some good news! Your aligners are made from a thin plastic, but they offer just a bit of barrier for your teeth. You’ll be able to avoid some damage that might’ve occurred otherwise.

Is Invisalign Right for Me?

The only way to know if Invisalign is right for you is by talking to your dentist. By having a consultation, they can understand your orthodontic issues and what movements are needed. You should also let them know about your teeth grinding. They will be able to take it all into account while they lay out a plan to get you the smile you dream of.
