Many myths circulate the world. From indigenous creation stories to marvelous tales, they might all seem fantastical. However, some might’ve sneaked their way into dentistry and stretched the truth behind certain procedures. There are misconceptions behind tooth extractions, but several aren’t what they seem. Here is the truth behind three you might’ve heard.
Myth #1:It’s Very Painful to Have a Tooth Extracted
The thought of having a tooth extraction can make you wince in pain by the thought alone, but it may be easier than you think! Many providers know how uncomfortable this procedure can be, so they make it as easy as possible with powerful local anesthesia and dental sedation.
Special tools are used to loosen your tooth from the surrounding tissues without causing too much disturbance. That way, you feel little to no discomfort, or rather, pressure instead.
Myth #2: Recovery Takes a Really Long Time
After you have your tooth removed, your body will need time to heal. While you might imagine this takes a long time, the initial recovery phase only takes a few days. You will need to follow your dentist’s post-op instructions.
Doing so will prevent complications like dry socket. This is a condition that can cause severe discomfort, but it can be prevented. After several weeks, the extraction site should be all good, but you’ll likely feel back to normal before then.
Myth #3: You Should Always Extract a Decayed or Damaged Tooth
A few patients believe that a decayed or damaged tooth should be resolved by pulling it. While this does get rid of the issue flat out, many dentists use this procedure as a last resort. They will try their best to restore the structure, as modern replacements, while reliable, aren’t as good as your home-grown smile. All other options will be explored before recommending an extraction.
So, while you might be hesitant about having a tooth removed, it can be important to protect your overall oral health. Keep in mind the truth behind the three myths you might’ve heard so you feel more confident deciding for your smile.
